Infinite Universes

kaleidocope

Infinite Universes (2024) explores the relationship between perception, repetition and the seemingly boundless dimensions of the cosmos. Through the optical properties of reflection and symmetry, Salar considers how a finite arrangement of physical materials can generate the impression of infinite visual possibilities.

The work takes the form of a wall-mounted kaleidoscopic sculpture, incorporating mirrors, acrylic, a lens and illumination. Within this contained structure, reflections multiply and intersect, producing intricate configurations of colour and geometry that appear to extend beyond the physical boundaries of the artwork. These shifting arrangements evoke celestial formations and the recurring patterns found throughout the natural world, suggesting a visual continuity between the smallest observable forms and the vastness of cosmic space.

Central to the work is the relationship between material reality and perceptual illusion. Although the sculpture occupies a defined physical space, the images it produces suggest an environment without discernible limits. Through this contrast, Salar draws attention to the ways in which our understanding of space is shaped by perception, and how the act of looking can transform something physically finite into an experience of apparent infinity.

The viewer's engagement becomes an essential part of the work. As the kaleidoscopic perspective changes, new configurations of light, colour and geometric form emerge, making each encounter an experience of discovery. Rather than presenting a fixed representation of the universe, Infinite Universes offers an evolving visual experience shaped by the relationship between the artwork and its observer.

The work invites reflection on the relationship between the limits of human perception and the seemingly limitless possibilities of existence, allowing the viewer to encounter an imagined cosmos within the intimate confines of a sculptural object.
