Cosmic Nuqta's Ark
Cosmic Nuqta's Ark (2023) explores the relationship between geometric order, cosmic origins and the philosophical idea of unity within multiplicity. Drawing inspiration from the natural sciences and Sufi mystical traditions, the work considers how the immeasurable complexity of the universe might be contemplated through a single point of origin.
The installation takes the form of an illuminated icosahedron, a geometric structure composed of twenty triangular faces. Each face incorporates mandala-inspired patterns and circular forms, creating a layered arrangement of symmetry and repetition. Within the structure, fluorescent points of colour evoke countless celestial bodies and imagined universes, their apparent multiplicity held within the boundaries of a unified sculptural form.
The concept of the nuqta, or primordial point, provides the philosophical foundation of the work. Within the Sufi mystical traditions that inform Salar's practice, the point carries associations with unity, creation and the emergence of existence. This symbolism is expressed through the geometry of the icosahedron itself, where multiple triangular faces converge at shared vertices, each forming a nuqta. The repetition of these points of convergence gives physical expression to the relationship between unity and multiplicity, as distinct forms meet to create a single, interconnected structure. Through this geometric interplay, Salar brings philosophical ideas of origin and unity into dialogue with imagery inspired by the cosmos, exploring the relationship between the singular and the infinite.
The surrounding darkness forms an essential part of the installation. Under ultraviolet illumination, fluorescent colours emerge from the sculptural structure, intensifying the contrast between illumination and shadow. Light reveals the work's intricate forms while darkness preserves a sense of mystery, creating an encounter in which the viewer's perception of depth, scale and spatial boundaries becomes uncertain.
Through this interplay of geometry, light and philosophical symbolism, Cosmic Nuqta's Ark invites viewers to contemplate the origins of existence and their own relationship with the vastness of the cosmos. Rather than offering a definitive account of creation, the work presents the universe as both an object of inquiry and an enduring source of wonder.
