Transcendence
Encaustics explores the relationship between material, colour and illumination through the expressive possibilities of wax-based painting. Combining beeswax with fluorescent pigments and ultraviolet light, Salar investigates how the physical qualities of a painted surface can influence the experience of colour, depth and luminosity.
The use of encaustic techniques introduces a material dimension to her exploration of light. Pigment becomes embedded within the wax, allowing colour to exist not merely upon the surface but as part of the substance of the work itself. Under ultraviolet illumination, fluorescent elements acquire a heightened visual intensity, creating a dialogue between the tangible presence of the material and the seemingly immaterial quality of light.
The interaction between wax, pigment and illumination draws attention to the shifting relationship between an artwork's physical construction and its visual appearance. What the viewer encounters is not simply colour applied to a surface, but a composition whose perceptual qualities emerge through the interaction of material and light.
Through this exploration, Encaustics reflects Salar's interest in the ways illumination can alter our understanding of form and materiality. The works offer an early expression of concerns that would continue to develop throughout her practice, particularly the relationship between physical substance, visual perception and the transformative possibilities of light.
