'Gaia’s Legation' amidst the Cosmos - Series
Gaia's Legation amidst the Cosmos (2024 - 2025) explores humanity's enduring fascination with the universe and the diverse ways in which civilisations have sought to understand and represent it. Drawing inspiration from historical cosmologies, religious traditions and philosophical interpretations of existence, Salar considers how our understanding of the cosmos has been shaped as much by imagination and belief as by observation.
Comprising six illuminated artworks, the series brings together digital imagery, light and contemporary materials to create visual interpretations of humanity's relationship with the celestial realm. Each work represents a distinct expression within a larger collective inquiry, reflecting the plurality of beliefs and perspectives through which human societies have contemplated the universe across cultures and generations.
The title draws upon Gaia, the ancient personification of Earth, and the concept of a legation, a delegation entrusted with representing its place of origin. Conceived and created on Earth, the five artworks become symbolic emissaries of humanity's cosmic imagination. Through them, Salar proposes an imaginative reversal of perspective: rather than merely observing the universe from Earth, humanity's representations of the cosmos are themselves returned to the celestial realm they seek to comprehend.
This movement between observation and representation lies at the centre of the series. The artworks embody the paradox of humanity attempting to interpret a universe of which it is itself an inseparable part. What begins as an earthly interpretation is imaginatively repositioned within the vastness of the cosmos, blurring the distinction between the observer and the observed.
