Into the void - Series
Into the Void (2014–2015) explores the relationship between colour, illumination and darkness, examining how visual experience is transformed when familiar conditions of perception are altered. Through the heightened presence of colour against darkness, Salar considers the ways in which light reveals form while simultaneously reshaping our awareness of the space in which it appears.
Comprising eight works, the series investigates darkness not simply as an absence of illumination, but as a condition through which colour acquires a distinct intensity and presence. In this encounter, darkness becomes an active part of the visual composition, allowing colour to emerge with an apparent independence from the forms and surfaces that ordinarily contain it.
The series also considers the relationship between sensory experience and the boundaries of perception. As colour emerges from darkness, the familiar distinctions between surface, depth and surrounding space become less certain. Salar draws attention to the act of seeing itself, inviting the viewer to consider how profoundly our experience of an artwork depends upon the conditions in which it is perceived.
As an early body of work, Into the Void offers an insight into the development of Salar's artistic language. Its exploration of colour, darkness and visual perception anticipates concerns that would find further expression in her later sculptures, illuminated works and spatial installations. The series establishes darkness not as an empty space to be overcome, but as an essential presence through which colour and light acquire their expressive possibilities.
